Hooked - (Stacia Naquin)
Updated: 10/11/2013 - I'm SO CLOSE to being able to do a pull-up. So my trainer introduced something new into my training.
We count on school bus drivers across southern Colorado to get local children to and from class safely. A concerned grandmother tells us a driver put her granddaughter in a very dangerous situation.
Book Drive is an unpaved road in eastern El Paso County, and the place where Trista Jeffries says an Ellicott school bus driver made an unplanned pit stop.
"I was livid," said Jeffries.
That was on September 25. The driver reportedly had to go to the bathroom and left two 7-year-old girls waiting on the bus. According to Jeffries it was long enough to leave the bus, walk to a nearby house and then back. The kids were 15 minutes late getting home.
"The bus could have slipped out of gear, somebody could have driven by and taken them, somebody could have driven by and done something to them," Jeffries said.
Jeffries took her concerns to school administrators, who told 11 News at that time reprimanded the driver, changed his route, and kept him on the job on probationary status. 11 News explained the story to another parent in the district whose children have taken the bus to school.
“At some point you have to put a little bit of faith in people you've elected as school officials and the people they've hired to make sure our children are safe,” said Robert Wall.
Jeffries still believes administrators ignored a big mistake and thinks student safety is being overlooked.
“They told me children's safety is their utmost concern to me that wasn't shown by their actions,” she said.
11 News spoke to D-22 Director of Transportation Teresa Burke on the phone Monday. Following the district investigation that involved the input of the superintendent, Burke does not feel the children were in danger. The driver involved has since resigned.
