Roads are icy in spots that saw accumulating snow yesterday. Allow yourself plenty of extra time this morning and dress warmly, as wind chills are in the single digits and teens for many. A second disturbance will bring another round of snow showers to the Front Range this afternoon and early evening. While not as heavy as yesterday, some additional light accumulations over the higher terrain will be possible, including Teller and Northern El Paso Counties. Highs in the 30s and 40s will feel colder when factoring a blustery northwest wind. Click on the 'Weather' tab for more...
A police chase ended in a crash after officers forced a suspected carjacker off the road.
The suspect was refusing to stop when police attempted to pull him over, and fired several shots at pursuing officers as he tried to speed away.
According to police, the suspect, 33-year-old Carl Lee Griego, stole a truck around 8:17 p.m. from the area of Galley Road and Murray Boulevard. A man was parking his truck when Griego allegedly approached him from behind and ordered him out of his vehicle at gun point.
Police came across the stolen vehicle about 40 minutes later. Officers followed the suspect over three miles from the area of Hancock and Fillmore to the 600 block of North Circle, where they forced the truck to crash.
The area near Circle and Platte was blocked off well into Saturday night as police investigated the incident.
After the crash, Griego and one officer were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both have been released. Griego faces charges of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer and aggravated robbery.
The Colorado Springs Police Department and 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office will investigate the incident due to the tactical vehicle intervention used in the crash.
