A woman is uninjured after her cell phone blocked a bullet in a possible drive-by Friday night.
Officers were dispatched to the Southpointe Apartments on the 3900 block of Lakehurst Drive just before 11 p.m. on several reports of shots fired in the area. Police found the woman shortly after arriving on scene, who told officers she was standing outside building 3815 when her phone, which she was carrying in her pants pocket, was struck by a bullet. She sustained no injuries.
"She got so lucky,” Donna Brooks, who lives in the apartment complex, said. “I mean cause it hit her almost right in the hip."
A second person on scene told officers a bullet fired from outside his apartment traveled through his exterior wall and into his home, narrowly missing his head.
"There's a bullet hole sitting there right above the computer monitor where I'm watching my movie," Chris Blower said.
If he had been standing, he would have been hit. That reality is still sinking in for him.
"It didn't happen, me getting shot that is...so life goes on,” Blower said. “That's what I'm going to do."
Police found several shell casings around the complex, and say they received reports of 10 rounds being fired. Witnesses say a person inside a sedan seen driving by may be the one who fired at the complex. Neighbors are shocked.
"You find shells everywhere and bullet holes in the building,” Brooks said. “It's crazy."
An investigation is still ongoing.
