We're getting our first look at a flood mitigation project that's helping protect residents in Mountain Shadows.
Five catchment ponds were constructed under the Waldo Canyon burn scar on the Flying W Ranch property. The ponds are 15 feet deep. The ponds help to capture the debris before it washed into north Douglas Creek and clogged city storm drains. The first pond is completely full of tree branches and debris.
“We talked to the engineers that designed these ponds and they collected over 11,000 tons of sediment, which would have otherwise gone down into our sewer system so these are immensely important facilities,” said Colorado Springs engineer, Tim Mitros.
This project is funded by part of the city's $46 million dollar budget for storm water projects.
