The shocking news that a newborn baby girl was found in an apartment complex dumpster has been confirmed to be a false report by the mother, police tell 11 News.
Police were initially led to believe that the infant had been found in a dumpster at the Rosemont at Shadow Mountain apartment complex, located on the 300 block of Shadow Ridge Grove near the new Lowe's store on North Nevada.
But after arriving on scene, police located the 17-year-old mother of the baby and determined that the infant had never been in or near the dumpster. Police say the mother at some point claimed to have found the baby in the dumpster, prompting someone to make a 911 call.
Charges under consideration against the mother include the felony charge of influencing a public official or a misdemeanor charge of false reporting.
Police have confirmed that the baby, who was believed to be between six and 12 hours old Wednesday, was not born at the hospital, but at home.
As of Wednesday, the baby was placed in protective custody with Department of Human Services.
The Colorado Springs Police Department wants to remind Colorado Springs residents that Colorado has a Safe Haven Law, which allows a parent to relinquish custody of a baby, 72 hours old or less, to an employee at a hospital or fire station without penalty of prosecution.
