Quick thinking by two young girls may have saved their lives.

Colorado Springs police say a man started to follow a 10-year-old and 3-year-old in their northeast side neighborhood Tuesday afternoon. When the girls noticed the stranger walking behind them, they began blowing a whistle and screaming loudly.

The man allegedly started running towards them.

The noise attracted the attention of several other girls inside a home in the area, who rushed outside, saw the man standing near the two children and ran to help. The group, consisting of eight to 10 girls, told officers that when the man spotted them, he took off in the other direction, getting in a van parked nearby and driving away.

Police say the suspect may be mixed-race, describing him as 6 feet tall with short, dark brown hair. He was reportedly wearing a green t-shirt and blue or blue-gray knee-length shorts. One witness told officers the suspect may have had a tattoo on his right calf.

The suspect was reportedly driving a white passenger van with tinted windows in the back. He parked his van on Havenwood Drive and walked a short distance to Gracewood Drive, where the incident took place.

Anyone with information on the identity of the suspect or the van he was driving are encouraged to call CSPD at 444-7000. You can also remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP.

Police praise the actions of the would-be victims, stating that they did a "great job of identifying danger and taking action to alert others." Parents are urged to have a conversation with their children about stranger danger while playing outside or walking to/from school.
