KKTV 11 News has learned Arvada police sent out a warning just last month about two attempted child abductions.
Two girls reported on two separate occasions, a man had offered them candy if they'd get into his car.
11 News confirmed Thursday afternoon Jeffco School District sent a warning letter about the attempted abductions to schools in Arvada and some in Westminster. The letter was sent to schools on September 13. It went to Witt Elementary School, where Jessica Ridgeway is a student.
The letter read as follows:
"September 13, 2012
Dear (name of school) parents/guardians,
This letter is to make you aware of recent incidents involving “stranger danger” in the Arvada area.
Arvada Police received a report that a child was approached by a stranger offering candy, asking them to get into the stranger’s car. A police report has been filed and they are investigating. There is an additional report of a child being approached by a stranger at Fitzmorris Elementary in Arvada after school. Once again, police are investigating that incident.
We want you to know that student safety is always our top priority and this event reminds us of the importance of talking with your child about stranger danger.
Reinforce safe behaviors with your child and tell them to always be aware of their surroundings.
If a stranger approaches your child, whether it is at school or outside of school, be sure that your child knows what to do: yell or shout, run away and immediately tell an adult. Stress to your child the importance of going straight to school and coming home immediately after dismissal, or leaving the bus stop.
Remind your child that if he/she sees anything suspicious around the neighborhood or school, they need to immediately contact the police department and notify the school.
I know that together, we can help protect the safety of our children. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at 303-982-XXXX.
Meanwhile, investigators are refusing to suggest any connection between a body found in Arvada Wednesday night, and a missing girl from Westminster. The body was found just five miles from the school Jessica Ridgeway was walking to.
Police in Westminster declined to say Thursday whether the body was that of a child.
Ten-year-old Jessica Ridgeway was last seen leaving for school on Oct. 5. The body was found Wednesday in the Pattridge Park open space in Arvada, about seven miles southwest of Jessica's home.
Arvada police say they are still trying to identify the body. They declined further comment.
The open space is south of the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge and is dotted with abandoned coal mine shafts. The area is favored by mountain bikers and model airplane flyers on weekends.
After several similarities in the two attempted abductions in Arvada 11 news reached out the family of a little Stramoor Valley girl who was kidnapped in June. Surprisingly enough, there are paralells in that case as well.
The two Arvada girls reported a man in a blue four door sedan approached them a month before Jessica Ridgeway disappeared.
Months before that happened, 11 News obtained a homeowner's surveillance video of a blue four door sedan driving off. That driver is suspected in that kidnapping where the girl was taken for at least 20 minutes and later released at a local gas station.
That suspect was never found and the family says while the victim is recovering, she is still a little apprehensive about walking or playing far from home.
We reached out the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and they tell us, this case is still an open investigation. They have exhausted all leads and say tips are welcomed.
If you know who kidnapped the girl back in June, call the Sheriff's office right away.
