A system producing heavy snow in the central mountains arrives in SE Colorado overnight Sunday into Monday bringing moisture, windy conditions and colder temperatures. Snow showers will be possible across the I-25 corridor to start the day. This system will produce bands of snow through the day Monday. Areas under these bands will see periods of heavy snowfall which, with windy conditions, could create travel difficulties. The Colorado Department of Transportation closes Mount Evans Road from Summit Lake to the top for the rest of the season.
The entire 28 mile road, which is Colorado State Highway Five, runs from Interstate 70 at Idaho Springs to the 14,284 peak. Summit Lake sits at about 12 thousand feet.
The road reopened for the summer tourist season May 28th, and
has been open ever since. Except for brief closures due to bad
Rocky Mountain National Park's Trail Ridge Road reaches 12,183 feet, making it the highest "continuously'' paved road in the country.
It remains open, weather permitting.
