Sexual Assaults at Air Force Bases Widespread

A new report says sexual assaults at U.S. Air Force bases are more widespread than officials first believed and addressing the problem will require major institutional changes.

The report was released Monday after an Air Force team studied 85 installations in the U.S. and overseas.

The study found many rapes were not reported because victims feared they would be disciplined, and response programs for victims were inadequate.

The assessment also says the Air Force lacked a formal sexual assault policy, and existing training has been sporadic and focused more on harassment than rape.

The study began in February, one year after the sex abuse scandal surfaced at the Air Force Academy.
