(Aspen-AP) -- The Colorado Division of Wildlife is bringing back its trout restocking program in force this year.
Spokesman Todd Malmsbury says the division dumped hundreds of thousands of fingerlings into high-altitude reservoirs and lakes around the Roaring Fork Valley last week. More stocking is occurring throughout the state.
The restocking program started in the 1950s but was halted in 1994 due to a lack of pure sources of fingerlings. Fisheries and natural populations were hit hard by whirling disease. Re-establishing disease-free hatcheries has since become a prime goal of the wildlife division.
Malmsbury said restocking resumed on a small scale last year and on a major level this year.
