Race Still Unresolved

Hundreds of uncounted ballots continue to cloud the outcome of the Republican primary in the 3rd Congressional District.

An Associated Press survey of the district's 29 counties reveals there are 286 known provisional ballots. Those ballots are cast by people whose eligibility is in question at the polling place, and is confirmed later.

Four counties, Mesa, Pueblo, Pitkin and Las Animas, are still determining how many provisional ballots they have. Final results could take up two weeks.

Former state natural resources chief Greg Walcher holds a slim lead over state Representative Matt Smith. It's unknown if the uncounted ballots could change the lead or close the gap enough to trigger an automatic recount.

Walcher has already launched his campaign for the general election. A spokesman says Smith is regrouping Wednesday to decide how to proceed. The other three Republican candidates, including Pueblo Sheriff Dan Corsentino, lag far behind Walcher and Smith.

Democratic candidate John Salazar had no primary opponent.
