A terrifying break-in happened to an elderly woman in Colorado Springs. Only on 11 News, she told us what she did to get him out of her house. The break-in happened near Circle and Airport on the southeast side of Colorado Springs Monday morning.
Vivian Martinez, 91, is shaken up, but doing ok. Martinez was washing dishes when she heard loud noises downstairs. When she went to check it out, she came face to face with a man inside her home.
"He started asking me for money and I told him I didn't have any money," Martinez said.
The 91-year-old said that's when the burglar pulled out a gun and ordered her to go into a closet. She said he pushed a large cabinet against the door so she couldn't get out.
"That’s when I realized I had my life button on and I called my life button. I could even faintly, I could hear (them) asking me if I was alright," Martinez recalled.
The crook could hear all this, too. The Lifeline operator was talking over the speaker in Martinez’s home.
"So I think that's what scared him off," Martinez said.
After the suspect left, Martinez was still stuck in her closet. She used all her strength and was able to push her way out. Shortly afterward, a Lifeline representative showed up with medical assistance and they waited with her until the police came.
That suspect is still on the loose. His description is vague, he's described as a black man in his 20's about 5’6” with a thin build, and was last wearing a dark colored jacket, hoodie, and dark pants.
If you have any information about this break-in or the suspect, you're asked to call Crimestoppers 634-STOP.
