A cabin fire in Douglas County nearly destroyed a home for emotionally troubled boys and young men. Flames engulfed the cabin around 3:15 Tuesday morning at the Emily Griffith Center on Perry Park Road. That's just northwest of Palmer Lake near Larkspur.

Before firefighters arrived, the facility’s staff evacuated the 12 residents who were staying in the cabin. In all, about 70 children live at the center. "On initial arrival, we had heavy fire coming out of the front of the building… and all the residents were evacuated by staff on-site,” said Chief Jamey Bumgarner with the Larkspur Fire Protection District

Along with the 50 firefighters who responded, many area fire departments brought water tenders because there is no water supply. Center administrator Beth Miller says despite the fire, all of the boys went to their classes Tuesday.

Miller says the residents who lost their lodge and their belongings will move into another building. She also says the center is buying new beds, sheets and clothes for them.
