A Democratic lawmaker wants voters to give the Legislature permission to raise taxes to pay for schools.

Rep. Debbie Benefield made the announcement Wednesday surrounded by lawmakers and parents upset about education cuts. She needs to get the support of two-thirds of lawmakers in order to put the question to voters. That means she'll need votes from both Democrats and Republicans, an uphill battle in an election year.

Lawmakers can't increase taxes without asking voters first. Benefield's proposal would make an open-ended exception just for tax increases that would fund schools.

If the measure made it to the ballot and voters backed it, it would be too late to reverse the approximately $250 million that has been cut this year and is slated to be cut next year.

I think I would vote no. I am all for education and some of the districts are doing a great job and deserve more money. There are some absolutely wonderful teachers out there. But the problem is there are school districts in Colorado that year after year continue low CSAP scores like in the 20-30 range, parents not involved don't bother showing up for parent teacher conferences, students don't care and the teachers show up for the paycheck only. Until this is addressed by the state department of education I see no reason to give more of my tax money for education.

There is no way that our taxes should increase yet again to support schools again. If you do the breakdown of our tax monies over 90% goes to schools now. Once again the problem is six figure administrators getting paid too much. Please voters don't fall for this again. Until we can get law enforcement and fire protection built back up as well as returning our streets back to usable roads then we can't give more to schools. Look at the top heavy pay structure of the admin portion of schools. Cut their pay or better yet release a few of them that are truly dead weight. Give that money to our childrens schools. Seriously six figures for admin when our teachers make WHAT? This won't, nay can't happen.
