New studies suggest that many American mothers are giving up breast-feeding too early. Federal health officials say that nearly three quarters of new mothers are breast-feeding their babies. But the officials say they're quitting too soon, and using infant formula too often.
The study finds that less than a third of new moms are feeding their babies just breast milk at three months after birth. At six months, just eleven percent are feeding only breast milk. Infant formula doesn't do the same job of protecting babies against diseases, and against childhood obesity.
This happens to be World Breast Feeding Week and the Pueblo City-County Health Department is using it as an opportunity to educate moms.
The health department’s WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program is hosting an educational booth. The booth will provide information on Infant Feeding in Emergencies and World Breastfeeding Week. To celebrate breastfeeding women, staff members will be taking a free mother/baby photo of mothers that are currently breastfeeding.
The informational booth will be in the lobby of the Health Department (151 Central Main Street) from 10:00am to 2:00pm August 2-3, and 6 - 7.
