As police continue to enforce the new "no camping” law in Colorado Springs one organization is working hard to make sure our homeless find homes and work.
Homeward Pikes Peak is sponsoring the second annual Project Connect at the City Auditorium Thursday. The event provides information for homeless individuals and families on how to obtain the services they need to "get off the streets".
From help for veterans to services offered by the Springs Rescue Mission, the event provides resources our homeless can look into.
Brian Ries had to live in his truck for awhile. He has since found shelter but he visited the City Auditorium to better his life. "Trying to find all the help there is out there and trying to take advantage of it,” said Ries. “There is a way to get off the streets."
The event runs through 6 p.m. Thursday.
The Colorado Springs Homeless Outreach Team is continuing its effort to find homes for the hundreds of homeless still living in the now illegal "tent cities" under city bridges and along Fountain Creek.
In the last few weeks, about 230 homeless people have been helped with housing and other services. Meanwhile, another 130 are staying at the Express Inn Motel, including 16 children.
Two dozen of the adults staying at the motel have already found work.
