Pregnant Mom Recovering From H1N1

A Colorado Springs mother finds herself four months pregnant and sick with the H1N1 Virus.

Marysa Likness spent a month in the hospital back in October, fighting for her life and her baby's life.

It has been a long road to recovery, but Marysa and her unborn child are now doing fine.

"This baby is doing well and quite healthy," says Marysa Likness, who is still recovering from H1N1.

It was a different story less than five months ago when Marysa first became ill.

"I started off with pretty much what I figured to be a cold," says Marysa.

Doctors said Marysa had pneumonia caused by the H1N1 Virus. She was admitted to Penrose- St. Francis in Colorado Springs. After several days, she was transported by helicopter to a Denver hospital for treatment.

"There were times when they didn't think either of us were gonna make it," she says.

"It's like everyday is the longest day of your life," says her husband, Ryan Likness, who stayed by his wife's side while she was in the hospital.

Marysa was hooked up to a ventilator to help her breathe.

The couple says that through constant prayer, Marysa was able to get better. After weeks in the hospital, she was well enough to return home. However, she initially needed an oxygen machine to breathe and a walker to get around.

Now as the Likness family prepares for a new addition, Marysa urges everyone to get vaccinated for the virus.

"Get it because it's extremely difficult, and I would say it's definitely a miracle in the fact that I am okay and the baby is okay," she says.

Marysa tells 11 News she had planned to get vaccinated against the H1N1 Virus, but there was a shortage right before she became sick.

Doctors have asked Marysa if she will donate her placenta after she has her baby so doctors can study how the H1N1 Virus affects a fetus.
