It was a scary Tuesday morning for a dog and her owner in southern Colorado. The dog, Bet, broke through the ice on a frozen lake and was stuck in the freezing water for nearly 20 minutes.
All the action was caught on camera by the Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Protection District.
During the rescue, a bystander is heard cheering on Bet, "C'mon bet, c'mon baby!"
"I would say the first few minutes are the roughest,” said Kent Stinson, the information officer for Tri-Lakes Monument Fire. He says, the first few minutes are also the most dangerous, especially when the lake is so cold.
Within minutes of the emergency call fire crews jumped into their dry-suits, grabbed their ladders and rope and crawled onto the ice.
As the front fire fighter slowly made his way toward Bet, the weak ice beneath him gave way and dropped him into the icy water as well. But, minutes later he was able to get the rope around Bet and the team pulled them to safety. "That's what they're trained to do," said Stinson. These fire crews train extensively for ice rescues, but this fire district does perform many rescues like this.
Rescuers say it's best to just stay away from the ice altogether.
