Right now, they are pests but soon they might be reduced to a pile of sticks.

The Senate has approved a bill sponsored by Senator Wayne Allard that would provide millions to eradicate the tamarisk tree near lakes and rivers.

The tree can suck up to 200 gallons of water a day and contributes to the state's water shortage problem.

Similar legislation sponsored by Representative Scott McInnis is pending in the house.
