Great Colorado Payback

Updated: Sat 9:33 PM, Aug 17, 2002

(Denver-AP) -- Nearly a million dollars in forgotten money was given to Coloradans last month through the Great Colorado Payback program.

Colorado State Treasurer Mike Coffman runs the program and says it's the largest single month of refunds. He says with the downturn in the economy, people seem to have a greater interest in finding money.

Since the program to return unclaimed money began some 15 years ago, the state has returned about 100 million dollars.

Coffman says there is about 70 million dollars still waiting to be returned.

One person got cashier's checks and securities from dividends that totaled more than 120,000 dollars. Another claimant received 60,000 dollars in bonds.
