(Cripple Creek-AP) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has given Cripple Creek an $81,000 grant to buy better firefighting equipment.

FEMA Director Joe Allbaugh says the grant will be used to upgrade breathing equipment, buy a thermal-imaging unit and buy a compressed air system to refill breathing equipment.

Cripple Creek is one of nine Colorado fire departments that have been awarded grants in the past three weeks.

Nationally, more than 19,000 fire departments competed for a share of a $360 million appropriation for the program. Fifty-five hundred applicants were selected for funding.
