The mother of a Colorado Springs woman accused of attempted first degree murder of her own baby is speaking to 11 News exclusively.

Vickii Medford is the mother of Amanda Sims. Sims is the mother of that 9-month-old now in recovery after, police say, she was beaten and shaken by her own parents.

Vickii Medford will stand by her daughter through this and says Sims loves her baby very much and would never do anything to hurt her.

"All I do is think about my daughter and granddaughter," says Vickii Medford.

As Medford wipes away tears, "My daughter is not a bad girl. And I know she would never hurt her kids," says Medford. She says her daughter is innocent. "I mean, yes, she knew there were bruises before and she didn't protect her, but she did not try to kill that baby," says Medford.

Court documents obtained by 11 News paint a picture of what the baby went through. The documents say, in the days following when the baby was taken the hospital, several doctors observed her.
One pediatric neurosurgeon described the bruising as "sickening." Other doctors go on to say the baby was shaken, squeezed and has severe trauma to her body.

With charges filed this week, investigators say both Jesse Kaizen and Amanda Sims had something to do with these injuries to their baby.

"She deserves to be charged with something, I agree, she did not protect my granddaughter the way she deserves to be protected. But attempted murder? No," says Medford.

While the baby is now recovering, according to court documents, a doctor says she will be severely disabled, including being blind for years, if not, for the rest of her life.

The baby is now recovering in foster care and 11 News did place a phone call to Jesse Kaizen, the father of the baby, also accused of first degree attempted murder but our messages were not returned. Other family members of the Kaizen family refused to comment at this time.

Why does this person insist upon defending her criminal daughter and doesn't really seem to care about the fate of the innocent baby? If one of my children committed a crime as horrible as this one, I would definitely not be attempting to justify their actions.

This is just sick. If these people did this to this baby they should be punished to the fullest. If you dont want children dont have them!!!

I disagree with this grandmother's stance and this is why. If a mother passively stands by and sees that her child's safety is being compromised by someone she knows and does nothing about it she is as much guilty as the perpetrator!! Being in denial and sweeping abuse under the rug does not negate the abuse. The child's safety should have been the mother's top priority and she should have protected her flesh in blood.
