District 60 schools are celebrating, as innovation in health and wellness have earned them statewide recognition. Joining 10 other districts and two schools, D-60 was recognized by Commissioner of Education Dwight Jones at the second annual Commissioner's Choice Awards.
Jill Kidd, Director of Nutritional Services for D-60 says, everyone knows students can't learn if they're hungry. An example of how D-60 is a trailblazer in battling hunger is with their breakfast program. "What sets us apart for breakfast programs is that we server about 8,500 students, or about 50 percent of our student body on any given day, free breakfast; And in 23 schools that breakfast is served in the classroom. That's very unusual," says Kidd.
