The mother of Kobe Bryant's alleged rape victim speaks out in public for the first time since the case began.

In observation of national crime victims' week, the accuser's mother says she came to speak in support of her family and of victims' rights. She didn't identify herself as the mother of Kobe's accuser, only as the mother of a sexual assault victim from Eagle, Colorado.

She says, "Victims rights are about standing up for the truth. Victims rights are about becoming a survivor. I want to thank my daughter my daughter for teaching me about courage. I'm proud to be her mom."

Last month the mother wrote a letter to the judge handling the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case, asking him to bring the case to trial quickly so that her daughter may get on with her life.

Part of the letter read, "Her life is on hold and her safety is in jeopardy
until this case is over."

The mother's request for a speedy trial may be heard in court next
week when Bryant is due back for more hearings on what evidence
is be allowed in his case.
