U.S. officials say no civilians died when the military bombed a mosque compound during a battle in Fallujah, Iraq, today.
Iraqi witnesses say about 40 people were killed as they gathered for afternoon prayers.

A Marine spokesman at Camp Pendleton, California says one "enemy combatant'' was killed and there were ``no worshippers'' or civilian casualties.
But a Marine commander in Iraq says, ``We believe we killed a bunch of these guys.''
An Associated Press reporter saw cars ferrying out dead and wounded. Witnesses estimated that as many as 40 people were killed.
Marines are in the third day of a battle with insurgents in the Sunni Muslim city. After a six-hour confrontation with militants inside the compound today, they fired a missile and dropped a 500-pound bomb.
