State Republican leaders are throwing their support behind former Congressman Bob Schaffer -- after Monday's announcement that real estate magnate Dave Liniger has dropped out of the race to replace GOP Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell.
Liniger says his heart really wasn't in a race. State GOP Chairman Ted Halaby says the party will back Schaffer with a get-out-the-vote effort, direct mailings and contributions if he wins the August 10th primary. Schaffer is facing retired Air Force Academy law professor Dan O'Bryant -- a political unknown.
The race was thrown into chaos a month ago when Campbell announced his retirement because of health concerns. The frontrunner for the Democratic nomination is Attorney General Ken Salazar.
