It's out with the old to make room for the new, as a major demolition project begins at the Broadmoor Hotel and Resort in Colorado Springs. Some older buildings are being torn down to build a new event center. And Monday was the first phase of the project.

That had crews tearing down the 60-year-old Conoco gas station, along with some Broadmoor offices that were behind it. Just a dusty memory---moved aside for a bigger project: "To build a new events center, ballroom. It's going to be 60,000 feet. But we won't have big upward visual impact," says Allison Scott, Broadmoor Director of Communications.

Scott says there will also be a new 3-story parking garage. Next to the event center, it will hold nearly 1,000 cars and that should free-up more parking and congestion on the streets.

When the $175 million dollar project is complete, Scott says this will have one of the largest ballrooms west of the Mississippi River. "What it's designed to do is accommodate about 80 percent of all the trade shows that can be accommodated in the U.S.," she says.

Scott says the new event center will also carry the same “look” as the hotel---calling it “Broadmoor Buff “ or that distinctive pink color.

The timetable has work completed in just 17 months, with a grand opening set for October 2005.

Later this week, crews plan to tear down the Broadmoor’s old transportation center, which has been on-site since 1918.

Another aspect of this massive project is to construct some high-priced townhomes. They will be 3-story brownstones that carry a $1 million starting price.
