Peterson Air Force Base is in the running to be the new home of the Space and Missile Systems Center.
A Los Angeles base could be among 425 bases worldwide to be closed.
That's now where the Missile Systems Center handles about 60 billion dollars in contracts a year. Peterson is already home to the Air Force Space Command.
Experts say it's the most logical location for the center because it oversees all the Air Force's space programs and assets.
Proposals citing the best place for the missile center are due out this week.
The Space and Missile Systems Center handles contracts for everything from rockets to space-based radar.
