Fire System Weaknesses

Updated: Sun 8:24 PM, Jul 21, 2002

The patchwork of agreements among 46 of Colorado's 64 counties
is designed to help local, state and federal firefighters unite to
attack a wildfire quickly. But local fire officials say it's
fragmented and fails to provide key information. Federal
firefighting officials at the Pueblo dispatch center say they don't
even use the state information.
Boulder Fire Chief Larry Donner says Colorado has been able to
get by with the system before quick population growth in recent
years. But he says it's time for a change.
The Colorado State Forest Service, which manages the system,
plans to evaluate it this fall.
