Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey retired today after 13 years in the NFL
The 35-year-old McCaffrey says the decision was right for his career and his family. Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen calls the day bittersweet for the team and the fans.
McCaffrey was a starter on Denver's Super Bowl championship teams in 1998 and 1999. He also won a title with San Francisco in 1995.
He was one of former quarterback John Elway's main targets during his nine years with the Denver Broncos. They acquired him from the 49ers as an unrestricted free agent in 1995. He played three seasons with the New York Giants before joining the 49ers for one year.
McCaffrey leaves with 565 career catches, 101 of which were in 2000. Those receptions led to 7,422 career yards and 55 touchdowns.
However, injuries reduced the wide receiver’s time on the field. He broke his leg in the first game of 2001, but returned the next season to catch 69 passes for 903 yards. McCaffrey also had two concussions in three weeks last season.
