(Washington-AP) -- A soldier who was born in Denver has died of wounds received two weeks ago while hunting for Taliban and Al-Qaida fighters in Afghanistan.

The announcement Monday from the Pentagon confirmed the death of
28-year-old Sergeant First Class Christopher James Speer, who now
is from Albuquerque.

Officials say he was among five U-S soldiers injured in an ambush on July 27th in the east of Afghanistan.

Speer completed Special Forces training in 1997 and was assigned to the Third Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Authorities say about 50 U.S. soldiers and allied Afghan militia were trying to confirm intelligence about an enemy operative in the area when they came under small-arms fire.
