Manufacturing Job Cuts

Updated: Mon 9:32 AM, Aug 12, 2002

(Denver-AP) -- Poor economic conditions have hit Colorado manufacturing plants hard over the last 18 months, resulting in at least 20,000 job cuts.

That's a lot less than the 46,000 jobs lost in tech and telecom businesses since the beginning of last year.

But unlike those workers, manufacturing workers usually have a harder time find new jobs because they have very specific skills and less education.

Colorado Springs, which experienced a manufacturing boom in the 1990s, has been hit harder than much of the rest of the state. The downturn in the economy ushered layoffs at 12 plants.

The city's unemployment rate is 5.5%, compared with the statewide figure of 4.9%.
