Updated: Sat 5:59 PM, Aug 10, 2002

(Undated-AP) -- A 27-year-old woman killed in a U.S. Air Force plane crash in Puerto Rico was a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Captain Christel Angelica Chavez, formerly of Albuquerque, was the co-pilot of the MC13OH Combat Talon Two transport plane that crashed Wednesday night on the outskirts of Caguas, 20 miles south of San Juan.

Chavez was also the daughter of the National Hispanic Cultural Center director Tom Chavez.

Ed Lujan is chairman of the board of the Hispanic Cultural Center. He says Tom Chavez confirmed his daughter was killed in the crash, but didn't want to speak publicly about her death.

Lujan says he had met Christel Chavez on several occasions and describes her as a smart, impressive young woman.

Chavez graduated from the Air Force Academy as a first lieutenant in 1998.
