The Pikes Peak Region continues to see both light rain and snow, even a mix in some places so far in the early afternoon hours. Eventually this afternoon, the rain will change all into snow for the Pikes Peak region, while areas to the south and east start picking up on rain. By the overnight hours, all will be in the snow category. This looks to end by the early morning hours on Sunday. Some of the most visible elements of the new U.S. homeland security military command will remain in Virginia, even though its command will be based in Colorado Springs.
The new U.S. Northern Command will open in Colorado Springs on October 1st and will lead the military in fighting terrorism within the United States.
But efforts to help civilian authorities handle the aftermath of terrorist attacks or natural disasters will remain at the home of the Navy's Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk Virginia. The Colorado Springs command will oversee those efforts and work to prevent terrorists from reaching U.S. shores.
Military officials say that's because there are more potential terrorist targets on the East Coast.
