NORTHCOM Update

Some of the most visible elements of the new U.S. homeland security military command will remain in Virginia, even though its command will be based in Colorado Springs.

The new U.S. Northern Command will open in Colorado Springs on October 1st and will lead the military in fighting terrorism within the United States.

But efforts to help civilian authorities handle the aftermath of terrorist attacks or natural disasters will remain at the home of the Navy's Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk Virginia. The Colorado Springs command will oversee those efforts and work to prevent terrorists from reaching U.S. shores.

Military officials say that's because there are more potential terrorist targets on the East Coast.
