Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs is almost full to capacity at its Boulder Street location. So now plans are underway to build a new hospital on the north side, near the intersection of Union Boulevard and Briargate Parkway.

Development is so new in this area that some roads are still waiting to be paved. Memorial Hospital is in the process of buying 82 acres of land for about $18 million. Officials are hoping to close the deal by this summer and that's when construction will begin.

The new facility will be five stories with a medical office building on the same campus. There will be beds for 84 patients. The name is Memorial Hospital North.

According to studies done by the hospital, Briargate is where the city's growth is, and where it will continue to be. "We want to go there. That's where the people are that are coming to town,” said Memorial Board Chairman Curtis Brown.

Architects will try to align the hospital so that most of the rooms face west. That way patients will have beautiful views of pikes peak and the Front Range. "We're planning to have very large windows. People will be able to lay in bed look at sky, look out at views," said architect Tom Dwyer.

The new hospital will provide a full range of services, including labor and delivery, surgery, trauma and acute patient care. It will be designed so if can be expanded in the future, if needed. "I think, overall, it will bring better health care, more convenient health care to the community," said Brown.

It's going to cost more than $62 million to build the new hospital. That money will not come from taxpayers. It should be complete by the end of 2006.

Penrose Hospital is also planning to build a medical facility on the city's north side. Construction should begin this June near the intersection of Powers and Woodmen.
