Eight American service members have been killed and 14 others injured in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
The pilot had reported engine failure shortly before the chopper went down today in southeastern Afghanistan along the main road between Kabul and Kandahar.
A statement by the U.S. led NATO coalition says the CH47 Chinook transport suffered what's describes as a "sudden, unexplained loss of power and control, and crashed."
The military had declined to release any details on the crash, including how many people were on board, while the search-and-rescue operation was under way.
Authorities have said, though, they do not think the helicopter was shot down.
