(Denver-AP) -- Lawmakers are considering several long- and
short-term solutions to ease the effects of Colorado's extended
drought.
Short-term solutions include asking Cherry Creek Reservoir to
give up water to help farmers save remaining crops, or asking
farmers to sell unneeded irrigation water to cities if monsoons
fill their ditches.
Long-term solutions included building new water projects such as
the so-called ``Big Straw'' on the Western Slope.
The ``Big Straw'' project would pipe Colorado River water from the Utah borders east over the mountains to the Front Range.
Lawmakers heard these proposals at a hearing at the Capitol
Tuesday.
Some lawmakers say the state should consider water conservation measures that include restrictions on water-dependent
Kentucky bluegrass.
