Roads are icy in spots that saw accumulating snow yesterday. Allow yourself plenty of extra time this morning and dress warmly, as wind chills are in the single digits and teens for many. A second disturbance will bring another round of snow showers to the Front Range this afternoon and early evening. While not as heavy as yesterday, some additional light accumulations over the higher terrain will be possible, including Teller and Northern El Paso Counties. Highs in the 30s and 40s will feel colder when factoring a blustery northwest wind. Click on the 'Weather' tab for more...
A five-car pileup in Colorado Springs early Friday morning claimed at least two lives, and sent three other people to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police say a 52-year-old woman was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-25 at Bijou. Her black Chevy Cavalier collided head-on with another vehicle, and three more cars skidded into the wreck.
The woman who was driving the wrong way died at Memorial Hospital. A 17-year-old girl, who was a passenger in one of the other cars, died at the scene.
Police say alcohol was a factor. The northbound lanes of I-25 were closed for almost eight hours, backing up morning traffic.
Investigators say accidents like this one, are why they work so hard to get drunk drivers off the road. "If they are gonna be drinking and driving, we are gonna be out there and we are gonna do our best to prevent them from being involved in such accidents,” said Colorado Springs Police Spokesperson Rafael Cintron.
Police have not released the names of those who died or were injured in the crash.. They say autopsies and toxicology tests will likely be done by next week.
