Colorado Cashes in on Powerball

The Colorado Lottery has reported posting record sales of more than $407 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30, and providing more than $110 million for school construction and other projects. The previous sales record was $376 million in fiscal year 1998.

Southern Colorado schools have received $8.5 million of that money. Any school can apply for the money. It's then dispersed by the Colorado Department of Education to those in need.

Colorado joined the multi-state Powerball last August and some revenue from ticket sales goes to the Conservation Trust Fund, State Parks and the Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund. About 50 percent of all lottery ticket sales funds prizes. Sales revenue also funds lottery administrative costs and commissions for retailers.

On top helping out schools, the Colorado Lottery also funds the Bear Creek Nature Center and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
