A 19 year old Colorado Springs man is dead and his mother is behind bars, accused of stabbing him. The incident occurred Thursday night and is the 4th homicide in Colorado Springs this year.
Police say they were called to the a home at 1421 N. Corona St. around 7:30 Thursday night for a domestic disturbance. But when they arrived they found a teenage boy who had been stabbed.
19 year old Johnny Velasquez was taken to Penrose Hospital and later died.
Police arrested the victim's mother, 45 year old Ila Voyles, and charged her with first degree murder.
Voyles has a history of criminal activity that goes back more than 20 years. Charges against her range from domestic violence and assault to burglary and child abuse. Charges were however dropped in the child abuse case.
Colorado Springs Police Lt. Fletcher Howard says this isn't the type of crime they see very often. "Because of the biological urges that most parents have toward their kids we don't see a parent taking the life of a loved one".
Valesquez did not have any criminal history other than a misdemeanor drug charge as a minor. That charge was later dismissed.
