A southern Colorado school district is using federal money to make big changes to their lunch services at six of their schools.

Pueblo City School District 60 used $73,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment act dollars to purchase new equipment. Central High School is one of the schools that received support. They replaced heating tables that were 54 years old with new serving lines. The new lines keep food hotter and use electricity better. They also replaced a malfunctioning oven.

Other federal money is being used to provide lunches to all Central High School students at no cost. "What we're able to do is serve the children within our federal reimbursement dollars, and there is no need to charge the parents. The district will not be adding any funds to it either so it's totally a federally funded program," says Jill Kidd, Director of Nutrition Services for D-60 schools. Because 77 percent of the students who attend Central High School qualified for free lunches, District 60 decided to make the lunches free to all students. At D-60 schools, every students receives free breakfast each day.
