Another Fort Carson soldier has died while serving in Iraq. SPC Nathan Nakis, age 19, was killed Tuesday near Mosul, Iraq. The Department of Defense says SPC Nakis was in a convoy when he lost control of his vehicle after driving through an oil-soaked area.
SPC Nakis was assigned to Company B, 52nd Engineer Battalion (Heavy), Army National Guard, based in Albany, Ore. The 52nd Engineer Battalion is based at Fort Carson as part of the 43rd Area Support Group.
According to the website for the Oregon National Guard, SPC Nakis was a native of Sedro-Woolley, Washington. He was a 2002 graduate of the local high school, and an Eagle Scout.
His family says he always loved "playing in the dirt, being outdoors and acting like a soldier." And his family was not surprised when he joined the Army National Guard after graduation. Last winter he enrolled at Oregon State University to study Civil Engineering and Forest Engineering.
His family also said this: "I know that this deployment has been very difficult for the family people in the unit, but I believe that Nathan, a 19-year-old single college student, is making an adventure out of it."
