Ballot Initiatives

(Denver-AP) -- Five groups have made Monday's deadline to turn in petitions for prospective ballot initiatives.

If the Secretary of State finds that each group has at least 80,571 valid signatures of registered voters, there will be five initiatives left to voters on November 5th.

The proposed initiatives include a plan to require non-English speaking children to be placed in an intensive, one-year English program unless their parents request bilingual education.

The others include a proposal that would automatically send ballots through the mail for almost all elections; one that would require Republicans and Democrats to get petitions rather than caucus backing for races and a plan to allow voters to register and vote on election day.

Last week, petitions were submitted for an initiative to reform campaign contributions.
