A one-year-old is dead after a rollover crash on Highway 287, the driver and six others are recovering from injuries.
According to Colorado State Troopers, it happened about six miles south of Springfield on Tuesday afternoon around 2 p.m. A northbound pickup drifted off the right side of the road and lost control, rolling two times, ending up on its wheels.
Troopers say there were a total of seven people in the pickup: the driver, 55-year old Dannie Lloyd, and 66-year old Ruby Russell, both of Denver. In the back seat were five children, including one in the bed of the pickup. Their ages ranged from one to 17 years old.
Troopers say that except for the 17-year-old, everyone in the pickup was thrown out when it rolled. A one-year-old child was pronounced dead at the scene by the Baca County Coroner. Everyone else was taken to the hospital with moderate to serious injuries. The two adults and three of the children were taken by Flight-For-Life to Denver area hospitals. None of the occupants were wearing seat belts or in proper child restraints.
Troopers say he pickup had traveled from Texas and it's suspected that the driver may have fallen asleep. It is not suspected that alcohol or drugs were involved in this crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
