New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says there is no indication the air is unsafe to breathe, despite a mysterious gas-like odor that's covered parts of Manhattan and New Jersey.
Bloomberg says the "unpleasant" smell is a chemical that is mixed with natural gas. But he says it isn't known if the smell is from a gas leak or if that chemical has leaked on its own. He also says sensors do not show an unusually high concentration of natural gas.
The mayor says that a small natural gas leak on its own would not account for the smell carrying across such a wide area.
Bloomberg says he is "very confident" that the smell is not dangerous, and a Homeland Security spokesman says there is "no indication of terrorism."
