Pilot Dies When Plane Crashes, Bursts Into Flames in Elbert County
Witnesses say they saw the pilot doing maneuvers before the plane stalled out and began spiraling almost straight down. The plane burst into flames when it hit the ground.

A single engine plane crashed and burst into flames early Thursday afternoon near Kiowa in Elbert County, killing the pilot.

The plane is still burning at the scene of the crash, east of Kiowa, about halfway between Kiowa and Limon, near Highway 86.

Witnesses say they saw the pilot doing maneuvers, before the plane stalled out and began spiraling almost straight down to the ground. The plane burst into flames when it hit the ground.

Witnesses called 911. Emergency officials arrived at 1:05 p.m. The pilot was dead on arrival.

The identification has not been released.

The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are en route to investigate. Investigators do not yet know where the plane was headed or where it came from.
