A skier is dead after being caught in an avalanche yesterday at Snowmass.
25-year-old Nicholas Blake Davidson of New Castle was buried for about a half hour before ski patrolers and others were able to dig him out.
He was skiing in the Hanging Valley Wall area, expert terrain that has not been opened yet for the season.
The ski resort had received about 15 inches of snow in the previous two days.
Avalanche deaths within the boundaries of ski areas in Colorado are extremely rare. The last one happened in 2005 and until then, Colorado had gone 20 years without an avalanche death inbounds.
