Supreme Court Throws Out Two Initiatives

The state Supreme Court threw out two more initiatives for the November 2004 ballot Monday. The court ruled the initiatives violated the state's single-subject rule.

The two initiatives would've reduced the requirements for gathering signatures for ballot measures. The court said earlier this month that two initiatives to ban attorneys from serving on the state Title Board also violated the single-subject rule.

The court cited that decision in today's five-to-two decision. Justices Ben Coats and Rebecca Love Kourlis dissented. They said the court was blocking voters from considering initiatives that would alter the process for amending the Colorado Constitution and statutes.

Sponsor Douglas Campbell says he'll make changes and resubmit the initiative.
