The last man to hit .400 in the
major leagues has died.
Boston Red Sox great Ted Williams is dead at age 83.
Williams had suffered a series of strokes and congestive heart
failure in recent years. He was taken to Citrus County Memorial
Hospital in Florida today, and a sheriff's department spokesman
says he was pronounced dead there.
Williams hit .406 in 1941, the last player to reach the .400
mark. He won a batting title in 1958, at age 40, becoming the
oldest player to win such a crown. He retired in 1960 after 19
seasons.
He left the game with a career .344 batting average, 521 homers
and one-thousand-839 homers.
